Hey foodies! Last Saturday I attended the grand opening of Palmieri Cafe at The Market at the Dallas Farmers Market. The cafe’s owner, Corrado Palmieri, has been selling his pastries and pour-over coffees in front of the cafe while it is under construction. This place is special. Not just because of the great pastries and espresso, but because of Corrado. He is passionate and endearing. Corrado is from Galatina in the “heel” of Italy. He came to the United States with one goal: to create a cafe featuring authentic baked goods native to the area he came from. He learned to bake from his grandmother. Corrado insists on using only natural ingredients. All of the cafe’s pastry doughs are made with flours free of preservative and dyes. He lovingly refers to his coffee machine as the “Ferrari of espresso machines”. And believe me when I say it makes a great cup of stout espresso.
My favorite pastry at Palmieri is the cannoncini. They come in two flavors chocolate and the signature vanilla-lemon. Their shape is similar to a cannoli, but all similarity stops there. This dough is much lighter and it is baked, not fried. The dough pulls apart in light layers. The vanilla-lemon cream is perfectly balanced; just a hint of lemon without the tartness. The chocolate is light and flavorful.
Not all the pastries at Palmieri’s are sweet. There are also amazing savory options. Corrado’s calzones are made with bread dough rather than pizza dough. They are much lighter. I ordered the spicy beef calzone. It was the perfect size and filled with wonderfully spiced beef and cheese. No fillers here just the beef and cheese.
Corrado Palmieri’s mission is “to offer hospitality to anyone who is looking for moments of freedom in a warm and cozy atmosphere, and to serve high quality coffee and other fresh indulgences.” He has done just that. If the crowd of supporters (many native Italians) is any indication, Palmieri’s is here to stay. Bravo Corrado and buona fortuna!
