SusieCakes – Dallas, TX

I need an intervention. Or at least that is what my friends are telling me. They might be right, but SOMEONE has to do it. Last Saturday was SusieCakes grand opening in Dallas. Coincidentally, they are located right around the corner from the newly opened Carlo’s Bakery.  It was my lucky day. I was expecting a long wait and I was in and out in 45 minutes!!! The colors were lovely. They made me smile. bakery, dallas, foodie, cake, cupcake

The interior of the bakery was crisp, clean and bright. It smelled amazing…uh may zing! The cases were chock-full with cupcakes, cookies, bars, pies and puddings. IMG_4339IMG_4334

The first cake that caught my eye was the Tropical Coconut Cake. Getting a slice was a no-brainer. This cake was CRAZY with coconut. The base was a vanilla layer cake with coconut filling. Not just any coconut filling. This filling had a hint of pineapple. What a sweet surprise. As if that wasn’t enough coconut; it was frosted with coconut buttercream frosting AND sprinkled with more coconut. It was amazingly moist and wonderful. So good I made myself stop eating it because I didn’t want it to be gone. It was just as good the next morning…for breakfast. If you look closely at the pic below you can see the yellow pineapple pulp throughout the cake. IMG_5491

Next up was the Iced Molasses Cookie. This cookie was the size of a saucer. It was moist and tasted like fall. This cookie comforted me. The ginger, clove and cinnamon worked well in the cookie without overpowering each other. IMG_5509

If the molasses cookie tasted like fall, then the Luscious Lemon Cupcake tasted like summer. It was bright and refreshing with little lemon curd surprise inside. IMG_5523

My favorite of the day was the seasonal cupcake. The Pineapple Upside Down Cupcake was stupendous. This is NOT the cupcake you see all over the internet with the chunks of canned pineapple thrown in the bottom of the of muffin liner then topped with boxed cake mix. Nope, this is the real deal. This is a fresh pineapple cake mixed with pineapple, frosted with brown sugar buttercream and topped with a maraschino cherry. I am sorry this cupcake is only a seasonal choice. I could eat this baby year round.  IMG_5524

Susie’s motto is “if you can’t spell it, we don’t bake with it”. You will not find any artificial preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup or trans-fats in any of the goodies. The menu includes gluten-free and dairy-free items. One suggestion: download the SusieCakes app before you go. By downloading the app and joining the SusieFavors program you will receive two cupcakes and a piece of cake on your birthday!
