I am not exactly how long Zuzu has been around but it has been awhile. In the early 90s I frequented two locations: Skillman and Lakewood. The Lakewood location is and cotijo. I was surprised and saddened when I couldn’t find it on the menu, though it still appears on their website.
I love the bright, colorful interior. I would love to know the name of this green!
We started with the guacamole. It was fresh and citrusy. Could have used a smidge more salt, but we spiced it up with salt, pepper, jalapeños and red onion. Very good with the chips and the array of ZuZu salsa choices.
I ordered the soft taco platter. I chose one ground beef and one chicken with a side of rice and beans. The ground beef was possibly one of the best ground beef tacos I have ever had. The meat was so tasty! Savory, salty, with a little punch. Would love to have some of the meat in a dip of queso! WOW! The chicken taco was what I always remembered. The taste was nice. I am not sure of the spices or marinade they use (tamarind?) but it is very good. The only drawback was the chicken wasn’t warm enough. The beans are refried black beans. No salt or pepper needed; a sprinkle of cotijo cheese does the job nicely. The rice is nutty with corn and peas for a little texture.
We also tried one of the “limited time only” BBQ pulled pork tacos with mango salsa. Good, but not enough punch in the BBQ or salsa.
Two of my most favorite items on the menu are the flan and peach mango iced tea. The flan is perfection. It is creamy and full of vanilla flavor. I eat it slow and savor every bite. The peach mango tea is refreshing without being overpowering. AND it is almost caffeine free.
I am glad Zuzu is still around.
***Please note one of the tacos was gratis.***
