The taco trek continues. A couple of Saturdays ago my friends and I decided to eat tacos for every meal. Yep, every meal. We started with breakfast tacos at La Popular Tamale House (see post here.) Then, we headed to Velvet Taco on N. Henderson Avenue. The line was out the door but moved along quickly. Inside folks sat at communal tables while they were eyed by vultures patrons waiting for an open seat.
Do not go to Velvet Taco if you are expecting the average taco…you won’t find it here. What you find is an amazing array of taco masterpieces. I recommend starting with the Crisp Tots & Local Egg. This could be a meal in itself; so share it. Let me paint the picture here: crispy tater tots, creamy goat cheese, smoked cheddar cheese, avocado crema, salty bacon and on top of it all a perfectly fried egg. Poke the yolk and let it ooze through all the ingredients. FANTABULOUS!
I ordered the #16 (Fish n’ Chips) and the #1 (Buffalo Chicken). The #16 had beer-battered cod, curry mayonnaise, malted french fries and a coleslaw shred on a flour tortilla. The fish was yummy and crispy. I love the hint of curry in the mayo. The fries were freshly-made potato strings. I know right?! A meal in a tortilla! It got better. Next, I chowed on the #1. It was loaded with crispy, breaded chicken tenders, Buffalo sauce, Danish blue cheese, ranch, carrots and celery leaves on a flour tortilla. Another great taco. BTW, I like the way they serve the tacos on metal taco trays. I would hate to lose any of the precious taco ingredients!
Lastly, we ordered the Rotisserie Corn. It is “elotes style” but without the cob. The crisp corn niblets were mixed with queso fresco, asadero, Valentina Hot Sauce, crema and a lime wedge. Don’t toss that lime wedge to the side. Squeeze that baby all over the corn. It adds acidity and makes everything POP!
Get to Velvet Taco as soon as you can! You won’t have any trouble fitting it into your schedule! They are open until 2 AM most days and until 5 AM on Saturdays and Sundays. I know I’m going back. I have 19 more tacos to try!
Until next time…have fun and eat it up!
